Without a doubt, Quail Hollow is the perfect place to play a round of golf at your own pace.
Constructed in 1965 and designed by Charles E. Griffin, the course was overhauled in 2011 with renovations including replanted greens, new cart paths, reconstructed bunkers, and additional drainage.
Featuring a classic parkland design, the course has multiple tee boxes to suit any skill level. Its yardage clocks in at 6,811 (from the back tees), its USGA course rating is 71.8, and it has a slope of 131. According to Quail Hollow’s Director of Golf and resident pro, Keith Kulzer, the whole course, “takes roughly four hours to play.”
Aside from these technical considerations, Quail Hollow also holds the distinction of being among the most player-friendly golf courses in the Tampa Bay area. Here’s why:
Big Greens and Forgiving Fairways
Although the course offers some challenges, Quail Hollow’s regular players note that it’s also forgiving. Because the greens are top-dressed and get a lot of attention, they roll really well and fast. The fairways are narrow enough that accuracy is required, but parts of them are wide enough to provide a lift if your shot takes a turn for the worse.
“When you compare it to a tournament course like TPC, it’s not nearly as frustrating,” explains Kulzer. “There’s some trouble out there, but you really just get a chance to to enjoy yourself.”
No Forced Carries
Many golfers will agree that Niklaus-style 180-yard forced carries aren’t much fun, even if you do possess the skill and accuracy to realistically pull them off. Luckily, no forced carries are required at Quail Hollow. Golfers can run the ball up to every green the course offers.
Ever land in one of those inescapable greenside bunkers and immediately felt like calling it quits? Taking a half dozen shots to escape a few bunkers will decimate your score in a hurry.
You don’t need to have a killer sand shot to play at Quail Hollow, though. The course features shallow bunkers that most golfers can chip out of. Say goodbye to all the endless frustration that goes along with landing squarely in a deep bunker.
Quail Hollow is open to the public. Thanks to these features and the course’s friendly staff, it has become the preferred course both for Tampa residents and out-of-town golfers.
