You suddenly have golden opportunity at work. You’re going golfing with the boss (at a prestigious Wesley Chapel, FL golf course, no less). It’s a chance to spend some quality time with the person who decides the fate of your career and maybe finally convince him or her that you deserve that raise or promotion you’ve been gunning for.
It’s essential that you make a good impression. So what do you wear? It’s physical activity outdoors, so casual is fine, right? But how casual? What’s the etiquette?
Here are a few tips for how to dress to impress when you’re golfing with the boss.
- Some golf courses require a collar in order to play, but even if it’s optional, it’s still a good idea to have one, as it’s less casual and creates a better impression. A dress shirt is bound to be cumbersome and uncomfortable, though, especially in the Florida heat, so your best bet is a golf shirt or polo shirt. It has a tasteful collar, while still retaining the comfort and mobility of a T-shirt.
- Never, ever wear jeans to a golf game. First of all, they’re not well-suited to sports, golf included. And if you show up in jeans, your boss may think you don’t really care enough to dress better. For men, slacks or khakis are your best bet. Women can choose to wear something light and stretchy, like capris. Or you might choose to wear a golf skirt: sensible and not too short. For either sex, shorts are acceptable, as long as they aren’t denim and come down at least to your knees.
- You should also wear a hat — a straw hat, a visor, or a cap with a brim — to ward off the sun. Nothing with logos that you wouldn’t want your boss to see. And golf shoes are a must. If you don’t have them, you can get them from the pro shop.
