According to the rules of the United States Golf Association, you can only have 14 clubs in your bag during a round of golf in Wesley Chapel, Florida, and throughout the country. With this limited number of clubs, it’s up to you to find the 14 that work perfectly for your abilities. Instead of carrying random clubs you never use or only use once, retool your bag with the most essential golf clubs so that each club has a purpose.
Remove the Dead Weight
Before picking clubs, take note of the clubs in your bag that you never use. Typically, these clubs include a 5-wood, 3-iron, 4-iron, or specialty wedges. However, you should use your best judgment to find the clubs that are just dead weight in your bag.
If you’re a beginner or struggle on the course, stocking a 3-wood is in your best interest. While it doesn’t offer the same distance or flight of a driver, it’s far easier to hit off the tee, giving you extra control to hit the fairway. It’s also a nice club to hit when you’re on the fairway during a par-5 hole when an iron won’t get you on the green.
While most golfers carry only a pitching wedge or a sand wedge, a lob wedge is a valuable asset. Use this club to hop over any obstacles in your path, or use it to get from the light rough to the green when you’re about 25 to 30 yards away.
Obviously, you can’t effectively play a round of golf without a putter. However, you need one that plays to your strengths. Pick one with the right length, and choose from either a face-balanced or a toe-balanced putter to shave strokes off your game.
